The sculptured façade of the Ballinhof with its tracery-like ornaments and reliefs reflects Romanesque, Byzantine, and Gothic architecture.  The group of figures representing “mining, trade, and industry” at the corner of Ballindamm/Gertrudenstraße and the association with the shipping company below the bay window on the side facing Ballindamm are particularly impressive.

An exclusive office building, rooted in history

Thousands of passers-by take a stroll here every day – on their way to the shops, the office, the restaurant, or one of the nearby theatres or museums. The Ballindamm is one of the most exclusive locations in the Hanseatic City of Hamburg – set against the picturesque backdrop of the Inner Alster, with authentic river cruisers, sailing boats, and swans inclusive.

As early as 1900, Hamburg’s merchants were drawn to this beautiful location in the heart of the city centre with its exceptional scenery of lake Alster. The shipping company Hapag has been located here since 1903, and building number 17 – the Ballinhof – looks back on almost 120 years of history: the magnificent office building was designed by the renowned architects Lundt & Kallmorgen for the Portuguese ship owner A.C. de Freitas.
